Jean-Louis
1973 United Airlines Design Mod Striped Navy Wool Jersey Dress
Sold Out
This 1973 wool jersey dress is by French-born costume designer Jean-Louis. Jean-Louis was the head costumer at Columbia Pictures from 1944 to 1960, and is best known for designing the iconic nude rhinestone-encrusted dress worn by Marilyn Monroe when she famously sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy. In 1968, he began designing the uniforms for United Airlines.
This particular piece was sold at the department store I. Magnin, but exhibits the blue, red, and green-striped design of his 1973 United Airlines collection. Fully lined, it zips up the back and comes with a tie belt to cinch the waist. It presents beautifully, although there are some minor flaws. Repairs were done to a couple of small holes on the right elbow and one on the left back. They are very inconspicuous. (Please look closely at the last two photographs.) There are also two pin-sized holes on the back of the skirt. These imperfections have been factored into the price, though they are only noticeable under close inspection. The dress has been professionally dry cleaned and ready to wear.
The second and third pictures are of the United Airlines version of the design.
